Carers Support Groups 2010

For family, friends and supporters of those with dementia

Alzheimers Canterbury has provided a forum for carers of people with dementia to meet with others for the past 25 years.  Support groups grew from the need for carers to meet and learn from each other, and are an integral part of our support services.

Such groups are a safe place to share thoughts and feelings about caring for someone with dementia.  Carers' groups are for husbands, wives, friends, supporters, friends and neighbours – ‘informal carers’ – those who do not receive a wage for caring.

There is no need to book for this group, just come along to any or all of the groups that suit.

A quote about Carers’ Groups from Chris Perkins “NZ Dementia Guide”

“You need to be involved in the Alzheimer’s support group.  I don’t care that people say ‘I don’t need it’.  You do, as far as I’m concerned.  I went along and joined.  I wasn’t going to, because I wasn’t a person to go into a circle and tell them about my husband, you know, what is happening in your life, but I tell you what, they were brilliant!  There were people there who were ahead of my husband and they could say, ‘You know, my wife or husband was similar with the illness’.  And they would tell me what they did.”

“J” talking about her experience as a carer.
