Dementia the Basics 2011

This is a comprehensive two part course for professionals new to dementia care, or those who wish to refresh their knowledge and skills.

It is designed for residential care workers, staff nurses, community workers, community caregivers, clergy, social workers, occupational therapists, volunteers, pharmacists, solicitors, trustees, etc.

Making a Difference Courses 2010

A course for family and friends of people with dementia, providing information about what dementia is, and attending to the many topics that will assit to increase confidence and competence in the care given.
 
We are aware that for many peole it is hard to commit to participate in our six week course and accordingly, in 2010, we are introducing a new alternative format for this free course of three 3-hour sessions running weekly from 10am - 1pm and also, a 2-day version of the course on 2 weekdays, one week apart. 
The venue for these courses continues to be our meeting room at 314 Worcester Street, Linwood. 

Dates for the next quarter are as follows:

Two Day Course
Dates: 
  Saturday 18 & Saturday 25 September
Time:    9.30 - 3.00 pm
             Morning tea and light lunch provided

Three Day Course
Dates:   Tuesday 16, 23, 30 November
Time:     10.00 am - 1.00 pm

Community Education Seminars

Community Education Seminars 2010

From February, on the fourth Thursday morning of each month (except July and December) we host a free education seminar on an aspect of dementia.  Evening seminars are also held throughout the year.  We invite specialists to speak with time for questions and discussion.   The venue for these seminars is our meeting room at 314 Worcester Street.  The seminars are free of charge and no booking is necessary.

Topic:         Alzheimer’s and other dementias
This ‘ask the doctor seminar’ will start with Dr Jo Reeves, a consultant psychiatrist from the Psychiatric Services for the Elderly Assessment Team at The Princess Margaret Hospital responding to the questions ‘What is dementia?’, ‘What types are there?’ ‘How is it diagnosed?’ then responding to questions posed by participants – before, at the start and during this seminar.  Everyone welcome

Topic:           Dementia and Diet
Eating can become difficult for people with dementia.  Find out more about eating well and how to manage swallowing difficulties. Everyone welcome

Date:            Wednesday 20 October 
Time:            7.30pm – 9pm
Topic:           For adult children of people with dementia
Find out about the impact of dementia on families including roles and managing conflicts plus a word on genetics and dementia. Everyone welcome


Date:             Thursday 28 October
Time:            10.30—12 noon
Topic:            Behaviours and dementia
Increase your understanding of why certain behaviours may occur when a person has dementia and helpful ways to respond. Everyone welcome

Date:              Thursday 25 November
Time:              10.30 - 12 noon
Topic:             Dementia caring and stress
Recognise symptoms, sources and health effects of stress and enhance your techniques for managing it.  Everyone welcome
