Volunteer Programme

The Alzheimers Canterbury Volunteer Programme aims to provide support and companionship where a person has dementia.  This usually takes the form of assisting a spouse or family member who is the primary carer, and may be physically, emotionally, socially and financially stressed by their caring role.  Alzheimers Canterbury recruits, selects, trains and supervises a team of around forty volunteers.  We offer ongoing support and education to our volunteer team specific to those in the community with dementia and a Community Worker oversees each volunteer arrangement. A written contract between the organisation and volunteer provides a record of the respective responsibilities.
Volunteers relieve the carers for a few hours each week or fortnight to enable them to have some time to themselves.  This usually involved the volunteer spending time in the home in conversation with the person with dementia, sharing an activity or walking together in the neighbourhood.  This may take the form of a single visit but more often will be a regular ongoing arrangement over several months or even years.  Carers have said that the respite of this kind has helped them to continue caring from home for longer than they may have otherwise managed.
Our volunteers, while not paid, will receive an allowance to cover travel expenses.  While the Volunteer Service is provided to families free of charge, we do require carers to be subscribing members of the Society, and we gratefully accept donations towards the continuation of the service.
